Frequently Asked
Questions
-
The reconstruction of 11th St. is
as a two-lane roadway. There are a lot of
left turns along this stretch of roadway.
Will there be left turn lanes to accommodate
this movement? Do you anticipate moving
traffic to 10th St. during
construction?
Yes, there are left turn lanes along the
entire reconstructed roadway.
No, we do not anticipate moving traffic onto
10th St. during construction.
-
Plans for the reconstruction are only to
O St. In the area between O St. and Rhode
Island, how will the traffic lines be
painted? Considering the new bike lanes,
won’t the two sections have different
traffic lines?
Between P and Rhode Island there is an
existing bike lane. For safety purposes the
traffic striping to Rhode Island will be
painted consistently with the new striping
in the reconstructed area.
-
The Eleven Condominiums, located at 1111 11th
St., request that DDOT coordinate with the
complex liaison, Mr. Joel Berelson so he can
keep the residents informed of construction
activities.
DDOT’s field engineer, Mr. Osman Mohamed
will be in touch with the complex liaison.
-
Businesses have
several trucks that deliver goods throughout
the day. These trucks deliver via the 11th
St. access. How will you manage the
construction so that deliveries will not
be impacted? Is it possible to construct
this area in the evening?
The construction will proceed block by
block. Prior to construction in front of
a facility, we will provide a 72-hour
advanced notice. In addition, Mr. Osman
Mohamed will meet with individuals to develop a plan
to address specific situations and
develop a construction schedule that best
works with delivery schedules.
-
Parking is a big issue in the neighborhood.
We need as many spaces as possible. Please
be consistent with the work dates and block
parking only when there is actual
construction occurring.
We are evaluating the parking situation and
will work to keep areas open, as feasible.
-
Will there be disruptions in water
service?
We will provide an 8-hour notice of
waterline construction and anticipate that
water will be turned off during night time
hours when use is limited. The water will
be off for only a few hours.
-
What will DDOT do to fix the problem if
construction is not completed as
anticipated?
Should the contractor not complete the
project on time, they will be assessed a
penalty of $1,100 per day for each day that
they overrun the schedule. This penalty is
generally effective in motivating the
contractor to finish on time.
-
Are there plans to use the alleys to
divert traffic?
There is no plan to divert traffic in the
alleys. 11th St. will continue
to carry two-way traffic throughout the
construction phases. One half of the
roadway will be constructed at a time and
two-way traffic will be carried on the other
side of the roadway, with one lane in each
direction.
-
What are the landscape improvements?
Landscape improvements include new trees,
and shaping/trimming of existing healthy
trees. The tree canopy is double in some
areas with trees on the curb line as well as
behind the curb line. Bike racks will be
placed on both sides of the street at
several locations along each block. New
sidewalks, curbs and gutters will be
installed.
-
How will people get in and out of the
stores?
The contractor will create a bridge with
steel plates for pedestrian to use at
entrances.
-
The traffic signal at 11th St. and O St.
is highly anticipated. When will it be
operational?
The new traffic signal will be operational
at the end of the construction project.
(July 2009)
-
Will sidewalks be widened?
The sidewalks will be replaced the same
width as the existing sidewalks.
-
There are several on-going projects in
the area, with lots of activity, such as the
Marriott project and the Convention Center
site project. Are these projects
coordinated? Is it possible to arrange for
parking at the nearby City Center parking
lot while construction is on-going?
During construction, DDOT will provide a
traffic officer for the area to ensure that
safety measures are followed. We will also
evaluate the option of using other areas for
parking during construction.
-
Are the streetcar lines that are being
removed connected to other streetcar lines?
The streetcar tracks will be removed within
the project limits if they’re close to the
surface.
-
Why did DDOT choose the portion of 11th
St. from L St. to O St. and not from
Massachusetts to Rhode Island?
The pavement within this section of roadway
is deficient and needs replacement.
-
Will street cleaning continue during
construction?
Street cleaning will be suspended during
construction since it takes up parking
spaces.
