Project Update
The construction season for 2009 is nearly completed.  By the end of December, construction on 11th St., NW will be finished for the season.   Major construction activities will be completed by year’s end, with some final activities to take place in spring 2010.

  • Excavation and base course asphalt for the last section of roadway on the west side, between M St. and L St., is anticipated to be complete in December.  The concrete safety barriers will be removed once this final section is completed.

  • WASA’s 24-inch and 8-inch waterlines are completed.

  • Parking restrictions have been lifted throughout the project area other than in the construction area between M. St. and L. St.

  • New signs have been installed.  They will be uncovered once the section of roadway between M St. and L St. is completed.

  • Streetlight poles have been installed throughout the project area.  The streetlights between M St. and O St will be operational by the end of December.  Streetlights between L St. and M St. will be completed in the spring.

In spring 2010, the final surface pavement for the entire job will be applied.  Once this occurs, the striping for bike lanes, permanent pavement markings, and new traffic signals will be installed.  The new bike racks and benches, as well as final plantings are scheduled for completion in the spring.

Asphalt
The base course asphalt is an 8-inch thick layer of pavement.  The final roadway surface includes another 2-inch surface course asphalt.  Application of the final surface roadway will occur once the weather warms-up in spring 2010.  The base course of asphalt for the west side of the roadway is nearly complete, with the final section between L St. and M. St scheduled for completion in December 2009.  The contractor smoothed out the roadway surface with temporary asphalt around the protruding manhole covers to ensure a smooth ride until the final surface is applied in the spring.

Traffic
Two-way traffic continues along the roadway.  There are some areas where traffic is restricted and a flagger generally is available to direct traffic through the work zone.  Parking is available on both sides of the roadway other than in the construction area between L. St. and M. St.

Utility Update
DC WASA’s work is completed.  There is electrical work on-going for the streetlight and traffic signals.  This utility work is anticipated to be completed by year’s end.

Landscape
The District Urban Forestry Administration evaluated street trees along the roadway.  The contractor removed the trees identified as unhealthy and unsafe and has replaced them with new tree plantings.

Parking
The District Department of Public Works has covered the street sweeping no parking signs along 11th St in the construction area.  If you find any signs that are not covered, please report this to the construction office and they will be sure to cover the signs.  These signs are not in effect during the construction period.
